Indexing, identifiers and archiving

Where this journal's articles are registered, how their identifiers work, and what guarantees permanence.

Digital Object Identifiers

Once the journal's Crossref prefix is issued, every article published here will be assigned a DOI and registered with Crossref, together with its title, authors and their affiliations, publication date, license and full reference list. A DOI is a permanent handle: https://doi.org/10.XXXXX/jak.2026.002 will resolve to that article's page for as long as the journal exists, and will continue to resolve if the journal ever changes address, because the destination is updated rather than the identifier.

Depositing reference lists matters as much as depositing the articles. It means citations from these papers are counted towards the works they cite, and — through Crossref's Cited-by service — that the journal can report who has cited its own papers.

ISSN

The journal is applying to the U.S. ISSN Center at the Library of Congress for an electronic ISSN. An ISSN identifies the journal as a serial title, and several downstream services — including directories and library discovery systems — will not list a title without one. The number will appear in the site header and in every article's metadata once assigned.

Google Scholar

The site is built to Google Scholar's inclusion requirements rather than retrofitted to them:

  • Every article is a plain HTML page containing the complete text. Scholar's crawler does not execute JavaScript, so nothing on an article page depends on it.
  • Each article page carries Highwire Press citation_* metadata — title, each author and their institution, publication date, journal title and abbreviation, volume, article number, DOI where assigned, language and keywords.
  • The full text and the author abstract are free to read, with no login, no registration, no interstitial and no download required.
  • Every article is reachable from the homepage in at most two clicks, through a flat archive page that lists the entire volume as ordinary links.
  • A sitemap and an open robots.txt are published, and the journal maintains a dated feed of new articles.

Scholar does not accept submissions from publishers and does not confirm inclusion; its crawler finds conforming sites on its own, typically within several weeks to a few months of a site becoming stable and citable. Inclusion in Scholar is not claimed here until it has actually happened, and this page will say so when it does.

Permanence and archiving

A DOI is a promise that the thing it names will still be there. The journal keeps that promise three ways: article URLs are never reused or reassigned; the DOI record is updated rather than the link broken if the site moves; and published articles are never deleted — a retracted article remains online under its retraction notice, because removing it would break every citation that depends on it.

The site itself is static HTML with no database behind it, which makes a complete archival copy a matter of copying files. Copies are retained by the publisher, and the journal intends to enroll in a third-party preservation service once it meets the required years of publication.

Licensing and reuse

License terms for each article are named on its page, will be deposited with Crossref once deposits begin, and are expressed in the page's machine-readable metadata. Quoting, citing and linking to this journal require no permission from anyone.

Metadata corrections

If you find an error in an article's metadata — a misspelled name, a wrong affiliation, a bad reference — write to editor@journalofamericankava.org. Metadata errors are corrected on the page, usually within a few days, and redeposited with Crossref once deposits begin.
